Charles Neil Newcombe

A versatile sportsman, he played first-class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club and professional football for clubs including Manchester United, Chesterfield Town, and Glossop.

Charles Neil Newcombe was born on 16th March 1891 at Great Yarmouth he was baptised on 12th April 1891 at St Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth he was the son of the late Edmund Percy George known as Percy a railway office and Helen Ada Louisa Newcombe née Brunditt known as Ada of Matlock and later 4 Park Road High Barnet Hertfordshire.
His father Percy was born in 1854 at Newcastle upon Tyne, he died in 1916 aged 62 yrs his mother Ada Brunditt was born in 1860 at Runcorn, Cheshire they were maried on 4th September 1880 at Stockport they had 5 children,
In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Queen Street, Chesterfield, Percy 57 yrs is a railway officer he is living with his wife Ada 50 yrs and their children, Percy Harold 28 yrs a bakers clerk, Arthur 21 yrs a bank clerk and Charles 19 yrs no occupation listed.
Liuetenant Charles Neil Newcombe enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters Regiment as a private soldier service number 17289 he was commissinoed on 19th November 1914 into the 7th battalion Yorks and Lancashire Regiment, he was killed by a sniper in Fleurbaix, France, on December 27, 1915, at the age of 24. he is buried at Y Farm Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France
