Family history

Henry Martin was born in 1876 at Leicester he was the son of the late Barnett Martin a cigar maker and the late Phoebe Martin née Johnson, of 82 Truman Street, Nottingham.

His father Barnett was born 1850 at London he died in 1911 aged 61 yrs,his mother Phoebe Johnson was born in 1851 at Leicester, she died in 1915 aged 64 yrs, they were married in 1869 at Leicester, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 82 Truman Street, Nottingham, Barnett 61 yrs is a cigar maker, he is living with hs wife Phoebe 6o yrs and their son Henry 35 yrs single a printers packer.

Henry Martin was the husband of Edith Mary Lonch (born 15th September 1879) they were married on 17th May 1915 at Emmanuel Church , Nottingham, the lived at 27, Eastville Street, Nottingham.

Commencing 28th May 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Henry Martin enlisted at Loughborough, he served with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, he died on 3rd September 1916, having no known grae his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 10C 10D

'Martin. Reported missing September 3rd 1917 now reported killed on that date, Private Henry Martin Sherwood Foresters aged 40 the beloved husband of Edith Mary Martin 27 Eastville Street.'
