Family history

Ernest George Elston was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 18th June 1895 at St Albands Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of Edward a railway labourer and Mary Ann Elston née Whitchurch and the brother of James William, Emily, May and John Edward Elston.

His father Edward was born in 1856at Nottingham his mother Mary Ann Whitchurch was born in 1856 at St Ann's Nottingham, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In te1911 census the family lived at 55 Walker Street Sneinton Nottingham Edward 56 yrs is a railway labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 56 yrs a lace hand and their children, James William 27 yrs a widow and a lace dresser, Ernest George 15 yrs a railway capstan boy, May 15 yrs a scholar and their grandson John Edward 5yrs old.

Military history

Rifleman Ernest George Elston enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 7th July 1915 he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 46 - 48 and 50).
