Father: John Comery, born in 1854 at Nottingham and working as a bricklayer's labourer. Mother: Jane Comery born in 1855 at Dublin. Brothers:Richard, born in 1884 and working as a painter, Robert W., born in 1887 and working as a railway porter and Charles, born in 1892. Sisters: Phoebe, born in 1874 and working as a machinist, maria, born in 1876 and also working as a machinist, Sarah, born in 188, Mary, born in 1890 and Ivy, born in 1898. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 12, Howard Street, Nottingham.
William Comery married Fanny Elizabeth Shorrocks born 26th June 1884) they were married in 1906 in Nottingham. They had two children; Leonard, born 19th August 1906 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire and Cyril, born 25th November 1908 in Nottingham. They lived at 35 North Street, Sneinton, Nottingham before moving to 2 Potter's Yard, Haywood Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.
Commencing 10th September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Private William Comery was called up and enlisted on 25th March 1917, at Nottingham, he was 20 yrs and 3 months, he was a box cutter, he served in 'B' Coy, 10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). The regiment was involved in following up the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and he was killed in action on 17th February 1917, he was buried at Sailly Saillisel British Cemetery (grave ref Vl.D.6).
His brother Rifleman Richard Comery enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 8th March 1915 and was killed in action on 9th May 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 17th February 1919 read :-
“COMERY. – In loving remembrance of Signaller William Comery, beloved husband of Lizzie Comery, Haywood-street, Sneinton, killed February 17th, 1917. Fond memories linger. Sadly missed. – Wife and children.
“COMERY. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. William Comery, who died in defence of country February 17th, 1917. – Ben and wife.”
