Family history

Bertie Straw was born in 1896 in The Cape Colonies he was the son of the late Samuel a coal miner and his second wife Annie Straw née Russell of 7 Byfield Street, Radford, Nottingham.

His father Samuel was born in 1855 at Ilkeston, he died in 1918 at Natal, Sout Africa ( he had left the Uk on 1st June 1912 via London to South Africa) his mother Annie Maria Russell was bornn in 1870 at ilkston, they were married in 1890, they went on to have seven children, their children were all born in South Africa

At the time of Berties enlistment in 1914 his parents were living at 7 Byfield Street, Nottingham.

Military history

Gunner Bertie Straw enlisted on 2nd September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs and his occupation as that of a grocer, his next of kin was his father Samuel of 7 Byfield Street, Radford. He was posted to the Royal Field Artillery. He embarked from Southampton on 12th May 1915 and disembarked the following day at Le Harve. He was killed in action whilst serving with B battery, 52nd brigade Royal Field Artillery. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium panel 5 & 9
