George William Porter was born on 3rd November 1888 at New Basford, he married Ellen Guttridge (born 23rd April 1888) on 2nd January 1915 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham, they lived at 6 Ethel Terrace, High Church Street, Nottingham.
Commencing 2nd July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shiilings and 9 pence a week.
Private George William Porter, enlisted 21st November 1915 , he gave his age as 28 yrs and 7 months, his occupation as a lace worker, his address as 6 Ethel Terrace, High Church Street, Nottingham, his next of kin was his wife Ellen of the same address, he stated his religion was Church of England. He was posted to the reserves on 22nd November.
On 31st May 1916 he was mobilised for war and on 5th June 1916 he was posted to the 10th battalion Leicestershire Regiment with the service number 30753. He embarked from Folkstone on 21st September 1916 and joined the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front, he was transferred to the 6th battalion Yorks and Lancashire Regiment on 14th October 1916. He died of wounds on 16th December 1916, and is buried in Contay British Cemetery. grave reference 8.E.12
Death notice published 4th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“PORTER. – Died of wounds December 16th, 1916, Private G. W. Porter, York and Lancs. Regt. Never will his memory fade. – From his loving mother, sisters, and brothers, of 119, Nottingham-road, New Basford.”
