Ernest Richard Whitehead was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred a coal miner corporal and Elizabeth Ellen Whitehead née Brighton and the brother of James, Frederick, William, Alfred Edward and John Whitehead.
His father Alfred was born in 1868 at North Hill, Cornwall his mother Elizabeth Ellen Brighton was born in 1870 at Nottingham, theywere married onn 25th December 1889 at the Lenton Priory Church, Lenton, they went on to have 8 children,sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 4 Prospect Place Lenton Nottingham Alfred 43 yrs is a coal miner corporal, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ellen 41 yrs and their children, James 17 yrs a brass bobbin pinner Ernest 15 yrs a brass bobbin pinner,Frederick 12 yrs a scholar, William Thomas 9 yrs a scholar, Alfred Edward7 yrs a scholar and John 4 years old.
Private Ernest William Whitehead enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, he is buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery Mesnil-Martinsart Grave Reference: F 12
