Percy Swinn was born in 1881 at Lenton, he was the son of William Swinn a general labourer at a coal merchant and Elizabeth Swinn née Tooby of 18 Friar Street, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1846 at Langtoft, his mother Elizabeth Tooby was born in 1851 at Derby, they were married on 6th July 1868 at St Alkmund Church, Derby, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. Percy married Ada Emily Terry (born 23rd August 1889 at Radford) on 26th December 1908 at Lenton Priory Church, they lived at 5 Knights Yard, Church Street, Lenton, they had 2 children, Herbert born 2nd January 1911 and Alice May born 24th February 1915. In the 1911 census Percy is living at 44 Gibbons Street, Dunkirk, Percy 29 yrs is a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Ada Emily 21 yrs and their son Herbert 3months old. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 18 Friar Street, Nottingham, Wiliam Swinn 65 yrs is a general labour, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 60 yrs and their children, Joseph 23 yrs a wagon repairer and Dorothy 15 yrs an errand girl. Commencing 12th July 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private Percy Swinn enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 9th December 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on te Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.
