Cecil Stokes was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of (John) Thomas a general labourer in a timber yard and Elizabeth Ann Stokes née Goodfellow and the brother of Frank and Lucy Stokes of 9 Maxwell Street, Nottingham.
His father (John) Thomas was born in 1864 at Colly Weston, Northamptonshire, his mother Elizabeth Ann Goodfellow was born in Easton, Northamptonshire, they were married in 1889 at Stamford, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 15 Old Church Street Old Lenton Nottingham, Thomas 46 yrs is general lbourer at a timber merchants, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 41 yrs and their children, Frank 16 yrs a general labourer in a mineral water manufacturer, Cecil 12 yrs a scholar and Lucy 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Cecil Stokes enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he died of wounds at War Hospital, Warrington, he is buried at Lenton (Holy Trinity) Churchyard Nottingham and is marked by a Special Memorial)
