Family history

Leonard Spencer was born on 15th June 1893 at Lenton he was the son of the late Mark a brewer and Ada Spencer née Heath and the brother of George and Mark Spencer.

His father Mark was born in 1874 at Basford, he died in 1901 at Basford, he was aged 27 yrs, his mother Ada Heath was born in 1874 at Long Eaton, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham, they had 4 children,

In 1901 they lived at 32 Park Street Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 'Horse and Jockey public house, Mill Street, Nottingham. Mrs Spencer 37 yrs a widow and public house manager is living with her children, Leonard Spencer Heath 17 yrs an assistant electrician, George A 15 yrs a carter, Mark 13 yrs a florist, Leslie 9 yrs also living with the family is Annie Frost 33 yrs a servant, a barmaid.

In 1912 Ada married George Roe and they kept The Saracen's Head, North Sherwood Street, later moving to 1 Hutchinson Street, St Ann's (both Nottingham).

Military history

Rifleman Leonard Spencer attested on 10th September 1914 at Nottingham, he was 21 yrs and 87 days old, he was a lift man, standing 5' 3" and weighing 115 lbs. He served in Britain until 30th July 1915, when he embarked for France.

He was killed in action on 11 April 1917 and is buried in Monchy British Cemetery Monchy-le-Preux Pas de Calais (grave ref. 1.F.27).

Personal effects returned to his mother comprised: 1 disc, Princess Mary's gift, 2 wallets, 1 tobacco pouch, photographs, letters and cards.
