Family history

Alexander Porter was born in 1892 at Nottingham, he was the son of James a hosiery machine fitter and the late Sarah Porter née Thompson of 19 Preston Street, Lenton, Nottingham , he was the brother of Ellen, Herbert and Violetta Porter.

His father James was born in 1857 at Skerton, Lancashire, his mother Sarah Thompson was born in 1856 at Nottingham, she died in 1910 aged 54 yrs, they were married on 14th June 1874 in Nottingham, they had 18 children, sadly 13 died in infancy or early childhood.

In 1911 the family lived at 19 Preston Street Lenton Nottingham, James 54 yrs a widow and hosiery machine fitter is living with his children, Ellen 34 yrs a cotton doubler, Alexander 19 yrs a cycle polisher, Herbert 15 yrs a cycle polisher and Violetta 13 yrs an errand girl.
Alexander married Florence Allen (born 16th June 1895) ) in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 52 Willoughby Street New Lenton Nottingham. he was the father of Florence K Porter born 1916.

Commencing 17th September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Alexander Porter enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds, 12th March 1917, aged 25, at No. 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, France. Buried: Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France. Plot 8. Row A. Grave 187.
