John Lindley was born in 1873 at Basford, Nottingham, he was baptised on 5th April 1874 at St John Church, Leenside Nottingham, he was the son of Henry and Sarah Ann Lindley.
He was the husband of Teresa Lindley, born in 1874 at Mansfield, who worked as a lace hand she was to die in 19o5 at Nottingham aged 31 yrs
John later married Selina Eleanor Lindley (née Hayes). they were married in 1906 at Nottingham, He was the father of William (killed in action 22/9/1915), Gwendoline and Hilda Lindley.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 20 Commercial Street, Old Lenton, Nottingham,John 38 yrs is a goods checker, he is living with his wife Selina Eleanor 38 yrs and his children, William Henry 15 yrs a cop winder, Gwendoline 5 yrs and Hilda 3 yrs of age,
The family lived at 4 Snowdon Terrace Spring Close Old Lenton Nottingham.

Private John Lindley enlisted at Nottingham on 2nd September 1914 whilst residing at Lenton, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he went to France 18th March 1915 and was killed in action, 27th October 1916, aged 40, whilst in the line near Trones Wood, France during the Battle of the Somme.
Commemorated : Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
His son Private William Henry Lindley volunteered for service on 12th May 1912 at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 28th February 1915,. He was killed in action on 22nd September 1915 when the trenches at Verbranden Molan, Ypres were heavily shelled he is buried at Chester Farm Cemetery West Vlaanderen Belgium Grave Reference: I F 5
Nottingham Evening Post obituary 5 June 1917 (photographs). 'Father and son killed in action, Private JG Lindley (Sherwood Foresters, Machine Gun Corps), killed 27 (-) 1916 and Private WH Lindley (Sherwood Foresters), killed 22 September 1915, both of Spring Close, Lenton.'
