John Lane was born in 1878 at Newark, he was the son of James a coal mine superintendent and Harriett Lane.
His father James was born in 1846 at Nottingham, his mother Harriett was born in 1840 at Newark, they were married C1870,
In 1901 they lived at 27 Ryeland Crescent Meadows and in 1911 at 5 Willoughby Place Lenton (both Nottingham).
In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Willoughby Place, Lenton, James Lane 65 yrs is a coal miner superintendent, he is living with is wife Harriett 71 yrs they are living with their son John 33 yrs single and is a general labourer.
Private Johe Lane enlisted at Nottingham on 11th December 1915, giving his address as 2 Forest Place, Park Street, Lenton, he was 39 yrs and 4 months old and was a coal labourer, his next of kin was his mother Harriett of the same address. His original serial number 4/3777 appears to have been issued early 1914 - 3544 joined on 9th May 1913 and 3883 joined on 1st August 1914. He was posted to the reserves and he was mobilised for war on 25th March 1916 at Derby. He landed in France on 17th July 1916 and was returned home on 23rd July 1916
He served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, his service may have been with 2/4th or 3/4th Battalion, followed by the 4th (Reserve) Battalion. He was renumbered 201251. He was transferred to the Labour Corps between June and September 1917. He died on 12th November 1917, he is buried at Lenton (Holy Trinity) Churchyard, Nottingham (south of church)
