Alfred Howitt was born in 1894 at Dunkirk, he was the son of Joseph a labourer at a sand merchant and the late Alice (Emma) Howitt née Redcar. and the brother of Ernest and Gertrude Howitt.
His father Joseph was born in 1848 at Nottingham, his mother Alice (Emma) Redcar was born in 1849 at Chard, Somerset, she died in 1913 at Nottingham she was 64 yrs old, they were married in 1869 at Nottingham, they went on to have 9 chidren.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 77 Montpelier Road, Old Lenton, Nottingham Joseph 63 yrs is a labourer for a sand merchant, he is living with his wife Emma 62 yrs and their children, Ernest 23 yrs a labourer at a leather works, Gertrude 19 yrsa stainer at Boots the Chemist and Alfred 17 yra a polisher at a cyle Works.
Private Alfred Howitt enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he served at Gallipoli with the battalion. Illness was a bigger killer than the enemy and he contracted enteric fever. He was moved to a hospital on Malta where he died on 16th September 1915, he is buried at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 29 September 1915. 'HOWITT died of enteric fever, 16 September, at Malta, Private Alfred Howitt, 9th Sherwood Foresters, son of Joseph and (-) Alice Howitt of Dunkirk.'
