Arthur Holmes (junior)was born in 1894 at Basford, Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur Holmes (senior) a hosiery dyers labourer, and Kate Holmes née Kirk and the brother of Eunice Elizabeth, Harriet May, Florence Annie and Beatrice Holmes.
His fater Arthur Holmes (senior) was born in 1866 at Basford, his mother Kate Kirk was born in 1871 at Radford, they were married in 1892 at Basford, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Park Street Lenton Nottingham Arthur 45 yrs is a hosiery dyers labourer he is living with his wife Kate 40 yrs and their children, Arthur 17 yrs a machine improver at a telephone maker, Eunic Elizabeth 14 yrs an errand girl, Harriett Mary 9 yrs, a scholar, Florence Annie 5 yrs, Beatrice 5 months old,
Private Arthur Holmes enlisted at Nottingham, he served withthe 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France on 27th October 1915. he was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
