Bertie Willis Holmes was born in 1883 at Lenton he was the son of Charles a lacemakers shop cleaner and Catherine Holmes née Willis of Harley Street, Lenton.
His father Charles was born in 1848 at Lenton, his mother Catherine Willis was born in 1848 at Brinkley, Cambridge, they were married in 1868 at Radford,Nottingham, they had 6 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911, census the family lived at 20, Harley Street, Lenton, Nottingham Charles 62 yrs is a lacemakers shop cleaner, he is living with his wife Catherine 62 yrs along with Bertie's widowed elder brother Walter John Holmes 40 yrs and his thirteen year old son Albert.Bertie is 28 yrs and is a road sweeper.
Private Bertie Willie Holmes enlisted at Nottingham on 8th December 1915, giving his address as 20 Harley Street, Lenton, he was 33 yrs and 4 months old, he was a road sweeper, hisnext of kin was his father Charles of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 14th June 1916 at Derby and was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, hewas transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment on 8th August 1916, landing in France on 15th October 1916 in Mesopotamia having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial Iraq Panel 12
