Archibald Charles was the youngest son of Henry Emmanuel and Mary Catherine Hill (née Hallam).

His father Henry was born in Lenton, Nottingham, and his mother Mary in Stapleford. They were married at Nottingham St Saviour on 25 December 1872 and had at least seven children: Sarah Hallam b. 1873, Edith Ann birth registered 1876 (JFM), William Henry b. 1877, Mary Elizabeth b. 1880 and Susannah b. 1882 who were all born in Shardlow, Derbyshire, Kate b. Worcester 1886 and Archibald Charles b. Nottingham 1892 (AMJ).

Henry, a lace maker, his wife and three of their four children, Sarah, William and Mary were living at 107 Miall Street, Lenton, in 1881. Their second daughter Edith has not yet been traced in the census. Their fourth daughter, Kate, was born five years later.

By 1891 Henry and Mary had moved to 76 Miall Street where they were living with their six children: Sarah and Edith who were both working as tailoresses, William a butcher's apprentice, and Mary, Susannah and Kate. Archibald was born the following year.

Henry Emmanuel died on 12 May 1894 aged 45.

Henry's widow Mary was still at 76 Miall Street, in 1901 with six of her seven children: Sarah, Edith, Mary, Susannah, Kate and Archibald. Mary was employed as a cigar maker but her four sisters were tailoresses while Archibald was school age.

The eldest son, William, had married Ethel Mitchley (b. 1881) in 1900 (reg. JFM) and in 1901 William, a commercial traveller, and his wife were living at 88 Radford Boulevard with his mother-in-law, Martha Mitchley and her two sons.

Mary Catherine died on 13 August 1902.

William and his wife had moved to Leeds by 1911 where he was working as a carter (coal). He and his wife had five children, William Henry, Thomas Frederick, Edith Maude, Gladys and Kate. William Henry may have died in 1936 aged 58; a probate record for a William Henry Hill gave his address as Foundry Lane, Leeds, and probate was awarded to the widow, Ethel. Ethel Hill (b. 1 December 1881) and her youngest daughters, Gladys (b. 1912) and Kate (b. 1918), both shop assistants, were living on Tempest Road, Leeds, in 1939. Ethel probably remarried (Horner) and died in 1948 (reg. Leeds).

Sarah Hallam had married Henry Greenhalgh, a railway fireman, at Radford All Souls on 17 August 1901, the year before her mother's death, and in 1911 she and her husband, now a railway engineman, and their son, Robert Crook (b. 1902), were living at 22 Forester Street, Netherfield, Nottingham.

Susannah married Arthur Goddard in 1903 and in 1911 she and her husband, an assembler (speed gears) at Raleigh cycle works, together with their two children, Wellstead Arthur and May, were living at 203 Bobbers Mill, Nottingham. The family was recorded at 45 Bulwer Road, Nottingham in 1921; Arthur was now working for Jardines as a fitter (printing machines) although his son Wellstead was working at Raleigh as a fitter improver, Susannah was a tailors' machinist (coats) and their daughter May was a clerk at a wholesale dairy. Susannah was recorded as a widow on the 1939 England & Wales Register and living on Harley Street, Nottingham, with her married daughter May Harrison (m. Ernest Adrian Harrison, Lenton Priory May 1931). Her son Wellstead was also married (Doris Irene Gilbert, Lenton parish church, August 1930). Susannah died on 12 December 1952; a notice of her death in the local paper gave her home as 16 Harley Street.

Mary Elizabeth married Arthur Yates Nield in about 1903. Arthur, a sheet metal worker (gas meters), his wife and their three children, Thomas Claude (b. 1904), Edith (b. 1907) and Doris (b. 1910), were living at 91 Brushfield Street, Nottingham, in 1911. The family was still living in Nottingham in 1921 and a notice of Mary Elizabeth's death in November 1931 gave her home as 6 Lenton Boulevard. She was survived by her husband and children.

Edith Ann married a widower, Joseph Parker, at St Stephen's Church, Nottingham, on 3 December 1908. In 1911 she and her husband, who worked for Raleigh Cycles, and Samuel John (8), Joseph's son by his first marriage, were living at 19 Gloucester Avenue, Derby Road. Also in the household were Edith's two youngest siblings, Kate, a tailoress (clothing manufacturer) and Archibald, a machine hand (cycle manufacturer). Edith, Joseph and Samuel, who both worked for Raleigh Cycles, together with Kate, a dressmaker (own account), were still living at the same address in 1921. Edith was widowed by 1939.

Sarah Greenhalgh and her husband Henry had moved to Watford by 1921 where Henry was working as a locomotive engine driver (LNW Railway Company) and their son Robert an apprentice motor car engineer. .

Sarah and Henry, who was now retired from work, were living at Sunnybank Avenue, Bispham, Blackpool, in 1939. Also in the household were their daughter-in-law, Joan M (née Greehalgh m. Robert Crook 1938 JFM Blackpool), Sarah's widowed sister Edith Parker and unmarried sister Kate, a tailor's machinist. Sarah's son Robert, an inspector (aircraft), was recorded on the Register at the Station Hotel, Beverley, Yorkshire.

Edith and Kate returned to Nottingham where they lived at 3 Edwinstowe Drive, Sherwood. Edith died in February 1947; probate was awarded to her sister Kate.

Robert Greenhalgh died in May 1960, the probate record gave his address as Sunnybank Avenue, Bispham, and his parents continued to live there until Henry's death the following January after which Sarah returned to Nottingham to live with her sister, Kate, at 3 Edwinstowe Drive, Sherwood. Sarah died in February 1962; probate was awarded to Kate and their nephew, Thomas Claud Nield, the son of their sister Mary Elizabeth.
