Family history

Herbert William Herod was born in 1897 at Radford, Nottingham, he was the son of Herbert a lace warehouseman and Elizabeth (Edith) Herod née Bowers and the brother of Edith Elsie Gibbons (née Herod), Lilian Maria and Edna May Herod.

His father Herbert was born in 1868 at Radord, his mother Elizabeth (Edith) was born in 1872 at Radford, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham, they had 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 32 Osbourne Road Radford Nottingham Herbert 42 yrs is a lace warehouseman, he is living with his wife Edith 39 yrs and their children, maried daughter Edith Elsie Gibbons, 18 yrs and her husband Claude Vernon Gibbons, and their daughter William Heron 14 yrs an errand boy, Edna May heron 12 yrs of age a scholar and their grandson Hedley Claude Gibbons 4 months old.

Military history

Private Herbert William Herod enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 23rd battalion Royal Fusiliers, he died on 1st September 1916 on board a hospital ship, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8 C 9 A and 16 A.
