Family history

Alfred Frederick Hemingway was born in 1900 at Mittree, India, he was the son of William a regimental sergeant major and Frances Alice Beatrice Hemingway née Dobson of 142 Harrington Drive Lenton Nottingham he had a brother Ernest William Hemingway born 6th June 1897, Port Natal, South Africa

His father William was born in 1872 at Sheffield, his mother Francis Alice Beatrice Hemingway was born in 1871 at Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland, they were married on 17th March 1909

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 29 Park Row Nottingham William 49 yrs is a Regimental Sergeant Major he is living with his wife Frances 40 yrs , they state they have been married for 2 yrs .

Military history

Private Alfred Frederick Hemingway enlisted on 9th September 1916 at Nottingham, giving his age as '17 yrs and 133 days' amended to 18 yrs and 18 days, (he was actually only 16 yrs of age born on 7th August 1899 ) giving his address as 142 Harrington Drive Lenton, his next of kin was his father William of the same address , he was a picture framer. he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 25th August 1917, He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment later transferring to B' Coy 15th battalion Durham Light Infantry, on 24th November 1917 he arrived in the field on 4th April 1918, he was reported missing in action between 27th and 29th May 1918.later confirmed killed in action. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial
