James Alick was born in 1896 at Nottingham he was the son of James Johnson a domestic gardener and Marry Ann Hawkins of 17 Midland Drive, Lenton.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 8 Leonard Drive Denman Street Radford Nottingham, James Johnson 47 yrs is living with his wife Mary Anne Hawkins 57 yrs along with James's son James Alick 15 yrs a lace manufactures clerk. James states he and Mary had been married for less that a year they had no children.
James Alick Hawkins enlisted in Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters later transferring to the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He was reported to have been killed in action on 20th February 1916. However, the battalion war diary confirms he was almost certainly killed the previous day during a German raid on their position.

Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 20th February 1917 read:-
“HAWKINS. – In loving memory of our dear boy, Private Alick Hawkins, Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action February 20th, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother and father.
“HAWKINS. – In loving memory of our dear Alick, killed in action February 20th, 1916. For ever with the Lord. – Fiancée Jenny [Marshall].”
