William Herbert Hattersley was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of Herbert a cycle polisher and Emma Augusta Hattersley née Martin,. and the brother of Emma Augusta, Carl Leslie, Fredrck Roy, Winifred Muriel, William George and Charles Sydey Hattersley.
His father Herbert was born in 1873 at Sheffield, his mother Emma Augustus Martin was born in 1874 at Nottingham, they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 59 Grove Road Lenton Nottingham Herbert 38 yrs is a cycle polisher, he is living with his wife Emma Augustus 37 yrs and their children, Emma Augustus 16 yrs a book binder, William Herbert 13 yrs a school boy and errand boy, Carl Leslie 10 yrs a scholar, Frederick Roy 8 yrs a scholar, Winifred Muriel 5 yrs, William George 1 year old. also living with the family is William George Martin 75 yrs a widow and draughtsman Herberts father in law and Mary Clare Martin 46 yrs a machinst and Herberts sister in law.
Private William Herbert Hattersley enlisted at Nottingham on 28th April 1914, giving his age as 17yrs and 7 months , he was working in the hosiery trade, his address was 59 Grove, Lenton, Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, Hattersley he went to France on 28th February 1915. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 18, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
