Family history

John Robert Copeland was born in 1893 at New Lenton, Nottingham, he was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Copeland née Lee and the brother of Alice T, Martha G R and Tom D Copeland of 7 Harley Street New Lenton Nottingham.

His father Charles was born in 1856 at Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, his mother Elizabeth Lee was born in 1861 at Melton Mobray, Leicestershire, they were married in 1890 at Melton Mowbray, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Harley Street, Lenton, Nottingham, Charles 55 yrs is a post office pensioner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, Alice T 25 yrs a grocers assistant, Martha G. R 19 yrs a hosiery hand, John R 17 yrs a green grocer and Tom D 7 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private John Robert Copeland enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 4760 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he later transferred to the 10th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 18th November 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 9 A 9 B and 10 B
