Walter Ernest Clayton was born in 1883 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Charles a waiter and Rebecca Clayton née Wright and the brother of Herbert Alwin and Ida Lillian Clarke of 98 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.
His father Charles was born in 1849 at Nottingham, he died in 1901 aged 52 yrs his mother Rebecca Wright was born in 1846 at Tealby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1871 their marriage was recorded in the Caistor registration district, they went on to have 9 children,sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 207 Castle Boulevard Lenton Nottingham, Rebecca 65 yrs a widow is living with her children, Herbert Alvin 30 yrs a driller, Walter Ernest 28 yrs a lace clerk and Ida Lillian 25 yrs an upholsterer.
Rifleman Walter Ernest Clayton enlisted on 23rd April 1915 at Nottingham, giving his address as 207 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham, he was a clerk, his next of kin was his mother Rebecca of the same address. Posted to the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps he landed in France on 16th June 1915. He was killed in action on 21st September 1915 and is buried at Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium Y.2
His brother Private Herbert Alwyn Clayton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 27th November 1917, having no known memorial his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval
