George was born in 1898 at Alisworth, Northamptonshire, the son of Charles a farm labourer and his wife Elizabeth (Lily) Ann Clarke née Roberts of Northamptonshire.
His father Charles was born in 1852 at Sutton and Upton, Northamptonshre, his mother Elizabeth (Lily) Ann Roberts was born in 1863 in New Zealand, she died in 1916 at Peterborough she was 53 yrs of age, they were married in 1880 and went on to have 9 children
In the 1911 census the family are living at Sutton Wansford Northamptonshire. Charleslarke 59 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Lily 46 yrs and their children, Lily 24 yrs a cook, Charles 17 yrs a farm labourer, William 15 yrs a farm labourer, George 13 yrs a scholar and Esther 11 yrs a scholar.
Private George Clarke enlisted at Nottingham on 22nd August 1914 whilst residing at Lenton, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He went to France on 9th February 1916 and died of gunshot wounds to his thigh at No. 1 Casualty Clearing Station, Chocques, France, 28th August 1916.
