Henry Cartwright was born in 1889 at Chester, Cheshire, he was the son of Joseph Cartwright a navvy and Elizabeth Cartwright née Timmins
His father Joseph was born in 1860 at Tipton, Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Timmins was born in 1864 at Tipton, Staffordshire, they were married on 29th October 1882 at Dudley, Worcestershire, they had 3 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. their other surviving child was Joseph born 1886 at Tipton,
In the 1901 census the family are living at 22 Ramsey Street, Carrington, Nottingham, Joseph 40 yrs a navvy is living with his wife Betsy 37 yrs and their sons Joseph 15 yrs and Henry 12 yrs of age
In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 Ford Street Nottingham. Elizabeth Cartwright 47 yrs a laundress married is living with her son Henry 22 yrs a bottler,
He was the husband of Lily Shepherd (born 17th January 1892) they were married in 1913 at Nottingham, they were living at 46a Maill Street, Faraday Road, Lenton.
Commencing 5th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.
Private Henry Cartwright enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 20th July 1916 he is buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension Somme France 1.E.15
