Bertie Gilbert Hunt was born in 1897 at Radford, Nottingham, he was the son of Henry a labourer at a tobacco factory and Elizabeth Hunt néé Kennedy and the brother of Elizabeth and Louisa Hunt.
His father Henry was born in 1860 at Radford, his mother Elizabeth Kennedy was born in 1862 at Aberdeen, the were married in 1881 at Nottingham, they had 8 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 Kyte Street Lenton Nottingham Henry Hunt 51 yrs is a labourer at a tobacco factory, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Hunt 51 yrs and their children Elizabeth 19 yrs a dresser, Fred, 16 yrs a van lad for the Midland Railway and Louie 12 yrs a scholar.
In the same 1911 census Bertie Gilbert was living at 9 Belmont Terrace Mansfield with an uncle he is 14 yrs and a colliery pony driver, he is living with his uncle Willis Danby 40 yrs a coal miner hewer and his wife and children.
Gilbert Hunt enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters 4th Special reserve on 27 August 1914 at Nottingham aged 17 years 244 days he was a coal miner jigger, He was eventually called up on 16 October 1917 to help replace losses sustained by the battalion on the Ypres Salient. He was injured in February 1918, falling over whilst carrying wire and injuring his hand. A court of inquiry decided it had been an accident and not self inflicted. On 18 June 1918 a raiding party of 5 officers and 130 other ranks moved into the enemy trenches behind Posen Crater taking seven prisoners, one machine gun and inflicting heavy casualties. Two officers and five other ranks from the battalion were killed and eleven wounded. Gilbert's papers have 'Reported missing believed killed'.
His name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Dud Corner
