Samuel Edwin Chaplin was born in 1884 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of Samuel Chaplin a tailor and the late Emmaline Chaplin née Riley of 3 Eagle Place, Allison Rise, Nottingham.
His father Samuel Chaplin was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Emmaline Riley was born in 1860 at Nottingham, she died in 1917 aged 57 yrs, they were married on 11th February 1878 in St Ann’s Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 6 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 3 Eagle Place, Allison Rise, Nottingham Samuel 54 yrs is a tailor he is living with his wife Emmaline 52 yrs and their children, Annie 22 yrs a machinist, William 17 yrs a packer and Lewis 15 yrs an assistant to a provisions dealer.
Samuel Edwin Chaplin married Elizabeth Ann Dyes (born 25th May 1886 Nottingham ) on 12th November 1904 at Lenton Priory they lived at 2 Chester Terrace, Goodhead Street, Nottingham.
They had five children all born in Old Lenton Nottingham: Samuel born 10th April 1905, Grace Lily born 27th June 1906, Beatrice Annie born 17th August 1908, Gertrude born 5th February 1910 and George Lewis born 6th March 1915,
In the 1911 census the family was living at 15 Churchill Street Old Lenton, Samuel 27 yrs a fitters labourer is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 24 yrs and their children, Samuel 5 yrs, Grace 4 yrs, Beatrice 2 years and Gertrude 1 year of age.
Commencing 7th August 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Samuel Chaplin enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France on 29th November 1914. In December 1915 the battalion was transferred to Basra. He was killed in action on 7th January 1916 during one of the attempts to relieve Kut. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 14th February 1916 :-
“CHAPLIN. - Killed January 6th-7th, 1916, Persian Gulf, Lance-Corporal Samuel Chaplin, 2nd Leicesters. A noble hero he has died. - From his loving wife and children.
“CHAPLIN. - Killed in action, January 6th-7th, 1916, Persian Gulf, Lance-Corporal Samuel Chaplin, 2nd Leicesters. A noble hero he has died, his duty bravely done. - Mr. and Mrs. Dyer, Flo., Beatie, Gertie, and Elsie."
