Frank Riley was born in 1897 at Pitsmore, Sheffield, he was the son of John William Riley an iron planer and Betsy Emma Riley née Boothroyd of Great North Rd., Sutton-on-Trent.

His father John William was born in 1863 at Openshaw, Lancashire, his mother Betsy Emma Boothroyd was born in 1866 at Sheffield, they were married on 19th May 1887 at Sheffield , they had 8 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 47 Barlow Road, Sheffield, John William Riley 48 yrs is an iron planer, he is living with his wife Betsy Emma 45 yrs and their children, Horace 19 yrs an apprentice moulder, Sidney 16 yrs a joiner, Frank 14 yrs no occupation listed and Margaret 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Frank Riley enlisted at Sheffield, he served with 'B' Coy, 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 8th May 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
