Family History
Alexander Hamilton from Scotland married Annie Wiles in the Bulwell/Basford area in 1884. They had two children before moving to Bestwood around 1890 where Alexander worked as a coal miner in Bestwood Colliery. The family lived at 46 Bestwood Colliery for many years and had eight more children, one of who was named Archibald Gilbert Hamilton, born 1897. When he was only 13 he was working as a pit boy in the colliery along with his elder brothers.
Military History
Archibald enlisted at Hucknall. He joined a Scottish Regiment, possibly due to his father’s Scottish ancestry. He died of his wounds while fighting in France and is buried in the Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, 1.C.29
