William Rhodes was born in 1886 at Kiveston, Yorkshire, he was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Martha Rhodes née Robinson of 28 High Street, Basford, Nottingham.
his fathe Samuel was born in 1865 at Kimberley his mother Martha Robinson was born in 1866 also at Kimberley, they were married in 1884 their marriage wa recorded in the Baford registration district, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 28 High Street, Basford, Nottingham, his father Samuel 46 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Martha 45 yrs and 6 of their children.
William married Florence Stevens ( born 22nd January 1887 ) on 22nd December 1906 at Nottingham, they lived at 1, Lewin Place, Bloomsgrove St., Radford, Nottingham.
They had children, Samuel born 4th May 1907, Winifred born 23rd March 1913 and Florence born 24th November 1910.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Lewis Place, Boomsgrove Street, Radford, Wiiliam 25 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Florence 24 yrs and their children Arthur 4 yrs and Florence 4 months of age.
His widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week commencing 20th Janaury 1916
His widow remarried and became Florence Love
Able Seaman William Rhodes, R.N.V.R., Anson Battalion Royal Naval Division, was killed in action on 4th June 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
Enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers 7/9/14 and transferred to the RNVR at Crystal Palace 10/9/14; Anson Bn. 16/1/15-4/6/15 DD. Born 10/4/1886. A Miner. Wife, Florence Rhodes, 1 Lewis Place, Bloomsgrove St., Radford, Nottingham. Son of Samuel and Martha Rhodes. His wife later remarried & became Mrs Florence Love. ADM/171 = St.V.B. issued to Widow.
