Family history

Matthew Lee was born in 1890 at Worksop, he was the son of Henry Wardle Lee a coal miner hewer and Charlotte Lee née Bird of King Street, Hodthorpe.

His father Henry Wardle Lee was born in 1856 at Pinxton, his mother Charlotte Bird was born in 1855 at Oldbury, Worcestershire, they were married on 1st June 1873 at St John's Church Worksop, they went on to have 15 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at King Street, Hodthorpe, Henry 55 yrs is a caol miner hewer, he is living with his wife Charlotte 56 yrs.

Matthew Lee married Edith Ann Bull they were married on 17th October 1909 at Whitwell, Derbyshire, they lived at 11 Belper Street, Mansfield, they had 2 children, Clarence born 4th November 1912 and Lottie born 14th May 1916.

Commencing 19th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history
Private Matthew Lee enlisted at Leeds whilst residing at Fitzwilliam, Yorkshire he must have been not to tall as he was serving in the 16th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment, a Bantam Battalion when he was killed in heavy German shelling on 19 July 1916 preparatory for a counter attack following British success at the Bazentin Ridge.

Having had no known grave his name also appears on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.

Matthew Lee
Matthew was born at 4, 2 Court, Dock Road in 1890 and joined the other seven children of Henry and Charlotte Lee, who were further joined within six years by two sisters and another brother. His maternal grandfatheralso came to live with the family. All the men in the household were miners. Mathew married just befoere the outbreak of the war and lived at Hodthorpe with his young wife Edith before moving to Fitzwilliam near Barnsley.
