Albert James Davis was born in 1895 at Worksop, he was baptised on 12th June 1895 at Worksop Piory Church, he was the son of the late William a hotel proprieter and Maria Davis née Jackson of the Clarence Hotel, Old market place, Grimsby.
His father William was born in 1863 at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, he died in 1901 aged 38 yrs, his mother Maria Jackson was born in Upwell, Cambridgeshire, they were married on 30th March 1891 at St Peters Church, Wisbech they had 3 children, William born 1894, Albert b1896 and Alice b1892 all were born at Worksop.
In the 1911 cenus the family are living at the Clarence Hotel, 4 Old Market Place, Grimsby his widowed mother Maria 53 yrs is a hotl keeper, she is living with her sons William Francis 17 yrs a draper and Albert James 15 yrs a scholar also living at the Hotel are 4 adult servants.
Private Albert James Davis enlisted at Grimsby he served with the 1/5th battalion Lincolnshire Regimnet, he was killed in action on 3rd January 1918, he is buried at Cambrin Military Cemetery, France
Towards the end of 1917 the 46th North Midland Division returned to the pit tips and pit villages to the area in which it had suffered so heavily in the aftermath of the Battle of Loos in 1915. In the 138th Brigade of this Division, the 1st/5th Lincolnshire Regimant, included Private Albert Davis. This Battalion relieved the 1st/4th Lincs in the front line on the 1 January 1918 and two days afterwards suffered from heavy trench mortar and artillery bombardment followed by a trench raid by the enemy. Albert Davis was killed on this day and is buried in Cambrin Military Cemetery. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Davis who when in Worksop lived at, the long demolished 4 Potter Street. Albert was born in Worksop in 1896 just before his parents moved to Grimsby to run the Clarence Hotel and it was a Lincolnshire based Territorial Army unit in which he was serving when killed in action aged 22
