Cecil Dukes was born in 1892 at Worksop, he was the son of George Henry Dukes a boot and shoe maker and Sarah Kitchen of Frederick Street, Worksop.
His father George Henry was born in 1859 at Worksop, his mother Sarah Kitchen was born in 1862 at Whitwell, Derbyshire , they were married on 13th July 1882 at Whitwell, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood.
Their three children were Mary Annie born 1883, George born 1888 and Cecil born 1892.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 12 Frederick Street, Worksop, George Henry 52 years was self employed making shoes and boots, he is living with his wife Sarah 49 yrs and their children, Mary Annie 28 yrs was dress making, George 23 yrs junior was a coal miner and Cecil 19 yrs a furnace stoker at a steel works.
Lance Corporal Cecil Dukes enlisted very early in the war at Glasgow, he served with the Scots Guards at Glasgow. He was drafted to France on the 14 Jan 1915 and after only 10 days he was killed in action on 25th January 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. He was awarded the British and Victory Medal plus the 1915 Star.
