Family history

Ernest was born in 1897 at West Stockwith, he was the son of Thomas a foundry furnace man by trade and Mary Ann Hird (née Bowers). He had two siblings George Willie born 1893 and Alice born 1902.

His father Thomas was born in 1860 at Snitterby, his mother Mary Ann Bowers was born in 1866 at Blyton, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1887 theor marriage was recorded in the Gainsborougn registration district , they went on to have 5 children, sadly one was to died in infancyor early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family was living at Newton's Yard West Stockwith, Thomas Hird 51 yrs is a furnessmman in a foundry, he is living withhis wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and their children, George Willie 18 yrs a general farm labourer, Ernest 14 yrs a fettler in engineering works, Alice 9 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Ernest Hird enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Gainsborough, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 25th July 1917, he was buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Normandy, France.
