Charles Henry smith was known as Fred he was born in 1898 at South Leverton. He was the son of Athelston Smith (later known as Arthur) a foreman carpenter and Jane Smith née Pask of West Markham.
His father Athelston was born in 1856 at Oxford, his mother Jane Pask was born in 1857 at Glentworth, Linclnshire, she died in 1902 aged 45 yrs they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Boston registration district, they went on to have 10 children.
The 1911 census shows Charles Henry as being 13 years of age and a 'mate' on a boat called the 'Rosa May' owned by his brother in law John William Hewitt and moored at Middlebridge, Gringley on the Hill
Soldiers died in the Great War records show him as Charles Henry and that he was born in South Leverton and enlisted in Pontefract. and was killed in action on 3rd July 1916 during the battle of the Somme.
His medal card's also show him as being Charles Henry and that he first entered a theatre of war in France on 6th October 1915. He was entitled to the three medals, The 1915 Star, the Victory medal and the British war medal and it gives his next of kin as his sister Mrs H B Hewitt of Middlebridge, Gringley on the Hill.
His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
