Ernest Fennell was born in Scrooby in 1883. His parents were Henry and Emma Fennell (nee Fisher) who had 6 children, Henry and Emma married in 1877 Retford. where Henry was a employed as a railway worker. After having 4 of their children born in Scrooby, the family moved on to Penistone, Yorkshire, probably to carry on with his railway employment, now as a signalman. By 1901 Ernest was employed as a steelworker and in 1910, his father had died. When Ernest was 27, he was still living with his widowed mother at 3 Unwin Street, Penistone, working as a steelworks Bessemer.
Ernest enlisted at Penistone, died 1st July 1916 and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
