Family history

Sydney Burton was born in Northampton in 1891 to Percy William Burton a coffee house owner and Ellen Burton née Hartley, he had a sister Florence Evelyn born 1896 and a brother Percy Hartley born 1901

His fathe Percy William was born in 1861 at Sutton in Surrey, he died in 1901 aged 40 yrs, his mother Ellen Hartley was born in 1861 at Culowrth, Northampton they were married on 19th October 1886 at Culworth.

His mother, being a widow, remarried in 1904 to Ernest Callow in Northampton. Sometime between this event and the war, the family moved and by the time Sydney was killed, his mother and stepfather were living in Ranskill and his brother and sister were resident at Scrooby House.

Military history

Sydney Burton was attested at Sheffield on the 24th September 1914, giving his address as Scrooby House, Bawtry and occupation as farmer. He was sent to France on the 15th April 1915 and landed at Le Harve. Whilst fighting, he was killed in action and buried in the Hebuterne Military Cemetery, France.
