Sidney Roe was born in 1894 at Eastwell, Leicestershire he was the son of Robert Roe a farm labourer and Martha Ann Lowe née Lowe of Ragnall.
His father Robert was born in 1859 at Stroxton, Lincolnshire, his mother Martha Ann Lowe was born in 1866 at Cottesmore, Rutland they were married in 1886, their marriage was recorded in the Grantham registration district, they had three children, Robert Healy Roe born in 1888 at Springthorpe Lincs, Sidney born 1894 at Eastwell, Leics,and Cecil Henry born 1903 Eastwell.
The children were bought up in Eastwell where Robert the elder worked as a farm labourer and horse groom. They moved to Ragnall some time after 1903 and by 1911 Robert Healy was working on the farms at Harthill, Yorks, whilst Sidney was employed the same in Ragnall.
Private Sidney Roe enlisted at East Retford on 30th December 1914, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 17th August 1915 and was killed in action on 25th Decemebr 1915 he is buried in White House Cemetery, St Jean-Les-Ypres 1.F.19, Belgium

'Pte Sidney Roe
We produce above a photograph of Pte Sidney Roe, a Ragnall man with the 2nd Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action on Christmas Day 1915. The deceased enlisted on Dec 30th 1914 and went out to France in August last year. He left a good position to join the forces and was highly respected by his numerous friends'.
