John Goodman was born in Ragnall in 1898 the son of Thomas Henry a general farm labourer and Mary Jane Goodman (nee Gilbert) of Ragnall village.

His father Thomas Henry was born in 1862 at Holton, Lincolnshire his mother Mary Jane Gilbert was born in 1864 at Saxilby, Lincs, they were married on 28th July 1885 at St Bololphs Church, Saxilby, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Ragnall Thomas Henry 49 yrs is a general farm labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 47 yrs and their children, John 13 yrs a scholar and William Doulton Francis 4 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John Goodman enlisted at Lincoln and served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment , his medal index card states he first entered a theatre of war in France on 25th December 1915, and he was Killed in action in France on 31st January 1916.

He is buried at Cite Bonjean Military cemetery , Armentieres, France.
