John William Humberstone was born at Misterton in 1888 he was the son of Charles Edward a bricklayer and Emily Humberstone (nee Milner) his father was a brickyard labourer the family lived on Station Road in the village.

His father Charles Edward was born in 1866 at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, his mother Emily Milner was born in 1866 at Misterton, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Gainsborough registration district, they went on to have 6 children,sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, his 5 siblings were Eva Annie 1886 Thomas Edward 1890, Charles Henry 1893, Frances 1897 and Doris Vera 1907.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Station Road, Misterton Charles Edward 44 yrs is a bricklayer he is living with his wife Emil 46 yrs and their children, Charles Henry 17 yrs a moulder and Frances 14 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John William Humberstone enlisted at Gainsborough whilst residing at Misterton, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiement. In the 1911 census he is shown on active service with the Army in India ,John saw military service in Ceylon and India prior to his arrival on the Western Front he was wounded by a busting shell and subsequently died from these wounds on 26th September 1916 and is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France .
