Family history

Frank Thornhill (junior) was born in 1894 at Laneham he was the son of Frank Thornhill (senior) a former game keeper and the late Elizabeth Thornhill née Black of Laneham.

His father Frank was born in 1856 at Rampton, his mother Elizabeth Black was born in 1850 at Darlton, she died in 1904 at Laneham aged 54 yrs, they were married on 5th March 1885 at Darlton parish church, they went on to have 4 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Laneham in a vessel called ‘By Tat’ Frank 54 years is a labourer and a widow, he is living with his married son John 24 yrs a general labourer and his wife Lilly 26 yrs and their children, Frank 2 years and Blanch 1 month old, he is also living with his daughter Edith 22 yrs a house keepr and Frank 16 yrs a farm labourer.

Military history

Private Frank Thornhill enlisted at Retford he served with the 1/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he died of wounds.on 2nd July 1917 and is buried at Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery Grave Reference: II D 8
