Family history

William Heald was born in 1893 at South Clifton he was the son of Richard Heald a farm foreman and his first wife Mary Jane Heald née Tinker of Wood Coates, Fledborough.

His father Richard was born in 1859 at Wigsley Nottinghamshire his mother Mary Jane Tinkler was born in 1869 at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, she died in 1900 aged 31 yrs they were married on 7th May 1889 at St Nicholas Parish Church, Lincoln, they went on to have 7 children.

Following the death of his mother his father went on to remarry Edith Florence Bamford in 1902 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district, they went to have a further child, Herbert born 1903.

In the 1911 census his father is living at Wood coates, Fledborough he is shown as being Richard 52 yrs a farm foreman, he is living with his second wife Edith 40 yrs and his children, Herbert 8 yrs, Ethel 16 yrs, James 13 yrs, Ernest 12 yrs of age.

In the same 1911 census William has left the family home, he is a servant 18 yrs of age and is living at Darlton village, he is a labourer and is single living with William Wood 63 yrs a farm foreman.

Military history

Private William Heald enlisted in Newark on 23 August 1911 and signed on for 7 years giving his age as 18 years 11 months , he was a farm servant, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 12th March 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
