Albert Smedley was born in 1879 the son of John a cab proprietor and Ann Smedley née Greasley of Albert Street, Stapleford, Nottingham.
John was born in 1834 at Stapleford and Ann Greasley was born in 1839 also at Stapleford, married in 1859 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district they went on to have the following children, James b1866, Sarah b1875, Albert b1879, Arthur b1881 and Charles b1882 all were born in Stapleford.
Albert lived with his “unmarried wife” Ellen Wheeldon, at 14 Church Street. Stapleford and her children Ethel , George Dudley and John William Wheeldon.
In 1911 the family were living at 14 Church Street, Stapleford, Albert is 32 yrs and an ashphalter he is living with Nellie 31 yrs a widow house keeper and her children Ethel 14 yrs George Dudley 12 yrs and Jon 8 yrs
Commencing 24th July 1917 Ellen Wheeldon was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
Private Albert Smedley,was called up for service on 29th April 1916 at Derby, giving hs address as 14 Church Street, Stapleford, he was 37 yrs and 1 month, he was an ashphalter, his next of kin was his father John of Albert Street, Stapleford. He served with the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, landing in the Balkans on 3rd September 1916 he died of dysentery on 29th December 1916. whilst at Gallipoli. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq
Article published on 20th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“SMEDLEY. – On December 29th, of dysentery, Private Albert Smedley, with Indian Expeditionary Forces, fourth son of John and the late Ann Smedley, cab proprietors, Stapleford. A sudden blow, a shock severe, to part with one we all loved so dear. – Sorrowing father and ever-loving Nellie and three children.”
