Family history

Alfred George Field was born on 18th December 1890 at Ilkeston, he was the son of the late Isaac Keech Field a draper and Mary Ann Field née Peek and the brother of Emma (later Boswin) and Ada Field of 6 Warren Avenue, Stapleford,

His father Isaac Keech was born in 1853 at Stevington, Bedfordshire, he died in 1908 aged 56 yrs, his mother Mary Ann Lenton Peek was born in 1851 at Eynesbury, Huntingdon, they were married on 13th November 1871 at St Edmund Church, Northampton, they went on to have 11 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 Towles Avenue Stapleford, Nottinghamshire Mary Ann Field 57 yrs is a widow she is living with her children Lizzie 32 yrs a drapers manageress, Emma Busell 27 yrs (married daughter) Alfred 20 yrs a lace draughtsman and Ada 22 yrs.

Military history

Private George Field enlisted in the Army Reserve on 10 August 1914, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was 23 years 235 days of age and 5 feet 3 inches in height. He listed his father as deceased. After initial recruit training he was posted to the 1st Battalion in France on 27 December 1914. The battalion spent the winter South west of Lille and it was horrendous with terrible weather and trenches full of mud and water. By February some improvement was seen but some areas of trench were still made up of breastworks owing to the water level. At some point on 25 February 1915 Alfred was killed and he was one of three men to die that day. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France.
