Family History

John William Marsden was born in 1895 at Ilkeston, he was the son of William Marsden a coal miner hewer and Jemima Knight of 1 Albert Villas, Station Road, Ilkeston. His father William Marsden was born in 1846 at Bedworth, Warwickshire, he died in 1911 aged 65 yrs, his mother Jemima Knight was born in 1854 at Bedworth she died in 1910 aged 56 yrs, they were married on 6th October 1873 at Bedworth, they went on to have 12 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Albert Villas, Station Road, Ilkeston, William 65 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is a widow, he is living with his children, William 23 yrs a coal miner, Samuel 21 yrs a coal miner, Clara 17 yrs, John 14 yrs and Thomas 11 yrs.

Military History

Rifleman John William Marsden enlisted at Ilkeston, he served with the 11th battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he landed in France on 22nd July 1915, he was wounded in action and returned to England where he died of his wounds on 27th November 1915 at 4th North General Hospital and is buried at Ilkeston Park Cemetery.
