Family History

Arthur Kitchen was born in Cossall in 1898 he was the son of Joseph Rowland Kitchen a railway train examiner and Sarah Elizabeth Kitchen née Bailey of 32 Wentworth Street, Ilkeston Junction, His father Joseph Rowland was born in 1863 at Winthorpe. Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Elizabeth Bailey was born in 1862 at Long Hope,Gloucester, they were married on 31st January 1885 at St Laurence Church, Long Eaton, they went on to have 8 children In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Wentworth Street, Ilkeston junction, Joseph Rowland Kitchen is 48 yrs and is a railway train examiner, he is living with his wife Sarah Elizabeth 49 yrs and their children, John Rowland 24 yrs an electric power engine driver, Alfred James 18 yrs a coal miner, Joseph William 15 yrs a coal miner, Arthur Rowland 13 yrs a coal miner, Robert Chilton 10 yrs, Albert 7 yrs and Frank 4 years of age.

Military History

Private Arthur Kitchen enlisted at Ilkeston, he was serving with the 3rd battalion training reserve when he died of disease on 25th February 1917 at Military Hospital, Cannock Chase, he is buried at Cossall St Catherine Church.
