Family History

Thomas Edwin Johnson was born in 1886 at Ilkeston, he was the son of Albert a coal miner hewer and Frances Jane Johnson née Webb of 8 Digby Street, Ilkeston Junction. His father Albert was born in 1863 at Huninton, Lincolnshire, his mother Frances Jane Webb was born in 1861 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 16 children, sadly 9 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Digby Street, Ilkeston, Albert 48 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Frances Jane 50 yrs and their children William 18 yrs a coal miner hewer, Albert 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver and Allen 14 yrs a coal miner pony driver Thomas Edwin Johnson is not at the home address on the night of the 1911 census, it is presumed he is in the Army at this date.

Military History

Private Thomas Edwin Johnson enlisted and served with the 1st battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he landed in France on 4th October 1914, he was killed in action on 16th November 1918 and is buried at Cremona Town Cemetery, Italy.
