Family history

William Thomas Tebbutt was born in 1884 the son of William a cotton wool winder and Betsy Tebbutt (née Norris) of 101 Gladstone Street, Beeston.

His father William was born in 1853 at Beeston, his mother Betsy Norris in 1862 in Harby, Leicestershire. Married in 1882, they had seven children, six surviving infancy - William Thomas b.1884 (died in military service 20/2/1915), Mabel b.1 Harry and Betsy later lived at 885, Alfred b.1888, John James b.1892, Harry b.1895 and Charles b.1899 (killed in action 25/1/1918) Tebbutt.

In 1911, they lived at 101, Gladstone Street, Beeston. John was a domestic gardener and Harry an errand lad. Harry and Betsy late lived at 21, Collington Street, Beeston, Nottingham.

Military history

William Thomas Tebbutt attested at Leigh Lancashire 30th January 1915. He was evidently lodging with his sister Mabel Waters (née Tebbutt) who he cited as next of kin. According to his ASR he was 'deceased at Warrington 20/2/1915'. No cause of death was cited. it is believed that during basic training, he contracted pneumonia and died on 20 February 1915, after only 20 days service.

He was buried on 23rd February 1915 at St Elphin Church, Warrington, his address was Orford Barracks.

He is not recorded by the Commonwealth wargraves register nor on the soldiers died in the Great War.

Extra information

William's brother Harry Tebbutt enlisted with the RAMC at Beeston and died of wounds 25/10/1918.

William's brother Charles Tebbutt served with the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action on 25th January 1918.
