Family history

John George Stafford was born in 1896 at Beeaton, he was baptised on 20th April 1898 at St Johns Church, Beeston, Nottingham, He was the son of William John and his first wife Harriett Harvey and the brother of Charles Edgar, Louie, Agnes and Eric Stafford. They lived at 4, Denison Street, Beeston, Nottingham.

His father William John was born in 1860 at Orgreave, Yorkshire, his mother Harriett Harvey was born in at 1860 at Cuckney, Nottinghamshire she died in 1903, she was 43 yrs of age, they were married on 29th March 1881 at Cuckney, they went on to have 7 children.

Following the death of his mother his father remaried Louisa Smith (a widow) on 25th July 1908 at Basford registry office, William John was 47 yrs a widow and was living at 4 Deniston Street, Beeston, he was a coal miner Louisa Smith née Thompson aged 41 yrs was a widow and lived at 35 Wollaton Road, Beeston.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Denison Street, Beeston, William John 50 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Louisa 44 yrs and his children, Charles Edgar Stafford 19 yrs a fitter, John George 15 yrs a coal miner and Edric Stafford 12 yrs a scholar and Louisa's children, Louise Smith 19 yrs a slip winder and Agnes Smith 17 yrs no occupation listed.

Military history

Private John George Stafford served as George Stafford he enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Beeston, he served with the 1st Battalion, Leicesrshire Regiment, he died on 16th September 1916 of wounds at No 9 Field Ambulance, he is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Grave Reference: I B 8

Although cwgc shows his date of death as 19th September 1916, SDGW and pension ledgers and soldiers effecrs registers all show 16th September 1916 as his date of death.
