Thomas William Riley was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Frederick John a musician and Harriett Riley née Washbourn and the brother of Frederick A, Charles, Nellie, Ethel May and Bertie W Riley of36, Trafalgar Road Beeston.

His father was born in 1862 at West Ham, London, he died in 1908 at Nottingham, he was 4 6 yrs of age, his mother Harriett Washbourne was born in 1867 at Swindow Wiltshire, they were married on 4th March 1889 at St Thomas Chruch bethnal Green, London, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at they lived at 28, Nether Street Beeston Nottingham Harriett 44 yrs a widow is living with her children, Frederick A 21 yrs is an spanners worker, Charles 18 yrs a telephone driller, Thomas William 12 yrs a scholar, Nellie 9 yrs, Ethel Mary 6 yrs and Bertie W Riley 4 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Thomas William Riley enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Beeston, he served with the 2nd battalion Essex Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd September 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Panel 7
